Are Indian women really independent in today's world?
Some feminists would undoubtedly say that Indian women are not independent in today’s world reiterating the difficulties women face, while some would say yes, showcasing their capabilities and individuality. In order to gain a clearer understanding of what Independence for a woman entails, we need to delve deeper into the various aspects that contribute to it. Firstly and most intuitively, financial independence comes to mind. A women must be able to support herself and not have to rely on her family or partner should the need arise. Secondly, a woman who is not emotionally dependent on another individual can be considered as more independent compared to a woman who needs constant handholding through life. Thirdly, there is an obvious need to highlight women’s rights in any country, which covers an array of issues from her right to vote or undergo an abortion. Furthermore there is the issue of workplace equality. Evidently a woman hits her professional glass ceiling sooner than her male counterpart does for several debatable reasons. However, if she is not given the same opportunities as an equally qualified man, she cannot be truly independent psychologically. Additionally, and perhaps most importantly would be the concern of a woman’s safety. A woman is independent if she is able to exercise all her rights without the fear of being exploited in any way. If women are still subject to horrific acts they will not be able to exercise their freedom. Lastly, what society thinks of a woman sadly confines and defines her independence. As much as we try to ignore this aspect of life, especially in India, we need to acknowledge the harsh truth that even an independent woman can have her self esteem, self worth and confidence bruised or even shattered if society chooses to ostracize her.
Independence is unfortunately not limited to a woman’s ability to support herself financially, emotionally and physically. She is also subject to misogynistic perceptions and subsequently stereotypical gender expectations that limit her capacity to function as a self-sufficient individual. Independence should mean freedom in every respect. The world has progressed to a great extent in terms of women being able to receive quality education, vote, participate in mainstream politics or occupy high-ranking managerial position in top tier corporate firms. However, in terms of quality of life, safety, sexuality, gender sensitivity and perception of professional aptitude of women, a lot has yet to be achieved by society at large to be able to call a woman truly independent.
In today’s world we do have personalities of the likes of IndraNooyi and ChandaKochhar. These two strong, successful women have set the standard for all women professionals all over the world, demonstrating the fact that women too can manage home and work life. Embarking on a journey of dedication, vision and passion, these women are stark examples of how much the world has progressed. As the Chief Executive Officers of PepsiCo and ICICI Bank respectively, these women have broken the shackles that society places of the supposed weaker gender and proven to be a role model for millions of young girls aspiring to build a successful career. However, there are only a handful of women chairpersons in corporate India, which is an issue that needs everyone’s attention. From success stories to the darker side of the coin we have shameful and hateful crimes against women all over the world. As far as the news is to be believed, a woman in India faces far more trials and tribulations as compared to her non-residential Indian counterpart. In my opinion, women in India are subjected to far more sexual objectification and slander than a women sitting in say, London. Testament to this is the ‘Nirbhaya’ case of 2012 in the heart of India’s capital, New Delhi which is just one of the several undocumented experiences that fail to get sensationalized by the media. Could she really be considered ‘independent’ if her right to use public transport, irrespective of the time of day translated, to her being violated beyond imagination? This one incident doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of the enormous entity that is crime against women. Molestation, rape and even eve teasing can strip a woman of her confidence, sense of security and mental peace, without which she remains a ghost in her own skin. Hence, as far as safety is concerned, the world today still has a long difficult path to cover.
Exploring the lives of notable Indian women living in foreign countries, we find biographies of influential women such as Deepa Mehta, an Indian born Canadian film director and screenwriter. Using her reach to educate the masses about cultural taboos and traditions in India, she has even been nominated for an Oscar. Such women epitomize individuality and professionalism. Therefore, while it is possible to be a part of this niche that Deepa Mehta belongs to, there is always going to be an incident that reminds us of the reality that women still have a lot more to achieve and establish themselves as significant in the maelstrom of men. With respect to India, the reason for even questioning whether women are independent is because of the deep-rooted practices and beliefs. Women especially in rural regions are groomed to be homemakers with no sense of self and these ideals get ingrained in them, leading to a dependent lifestyle.
In conclusion, I would say that Indian women have dispelled most of the stereotypes and emerged as independent individuals. However, the effort to better their condition is not exhaustive but perennial. Opportunities and capabilities skewed towards any one gender are always going to throw light on our deficiencies. Hence as a society we must tirelessly strive towards empowering the women of the world regardless of caste, creed, religion, colour or even sexual orientation, because only then will we be living in a genuinely synergized community where we can all learn and grow as human beings.

Increasing Population of India
India is ranked as the 2nd most populated country. It is mostly seen as a menace, Poverty coupled with lac of resources and increasing demands. The recent price rise have troubled masses. As the population is increasing, It is getting tougher and tougher for authorities to control pandemic diseases, traffic and crime. Even the availability of basic amenities such as water, elctricity and housing is short of demands.
Many of the measures by GOI, UNESCO and WHO has not seen any significant improvement in the situation. there are schemes such as "We two, Our two" but there is no strong implementation of these scheme.
Through the decades Indians have learnt to live with these problems,. the large number of people makes it of the largest consumer market for global companies .FDI's is at its peak this decade. With the help of this capital India will look forward to a better living standerd, employment and support to the shrinking economy.
In the past decade IT sector has contributed a major share of exports from India and it is made possible by the large talent pool of talented professionals.
But if the western market slows down the outsourcing and Investment will stop. So India has to look upon its own infrastructure and environment. Entrepreneurs like Dhirubhai Ambani and Shiv Nadar has done their bits. Government has introduced food security bill last season.
The government has a huge task ahead of them to provide food, shelter and opportunities for its own people.
