Since its inception in India, reservation received a mixed response. These days it is even criticized. The controversy begins here. When started, it was a requisite for the well-being of the society. People belonging to the backward sections were then treated as slaves to say the least. They lived the most miserable lives that one could ever imagine. They were like puppets in the hands of the rich or higher community people. They were not in a condition to live a desired life of their own.Such was their pathetic condition. But the reservation system has completely changed the situation(probably). They have been given equal if not more opportunities along with the people of higher sections(so called). Now they are able to live their desired lives. But, these days reservation is turning out be a curse to ones who are not eligible for it. It's necessary to give them the scholarships and all regarding education so as to make it sure that those who are economically weak could fulfil their dream of pursuing education. The prevailing question is, to pursue higher education, students from so called backward sections just need 60 to 75 percent in their previous academics where as the students who doesn't come under reservation categories need over 90 percent(in most of the cases). Can this be judged fair? When they are provided with the necessary education, is it necessary to give relaxation in marks or percentage required? It's become likely impossible for a non-reservation student to get a government job. And we have our POLITICIANS to add to the woes. They are the ones responsible for this(may be). They tried to increase their vote bank by giving all the incentives possible to the backward and under-represented communities which gave rise to the present controversy. If this continues in the same manner, may be in the near future, the so called higher communities might find themselves badly in need of these reservations.
Situation is poor even now, many Backward castes are living similar situation in Indian villages, but we generally observe just the number of applicant for any post or admission seat. It is also to be considered that many BC candidate fail to maintain their Documents because of the clerical governance culture in government offices, and hence fail to apply or get the benefits of the scheme. There is also a provision of non-creamy layer certificate which enables only poor backwards to get the benefits. But many creamy layer castes also obtain certificates by greasing the palms. The system is correct and sustainable for over 5 years from now, but there are problems with its Implementation.
ReplyDeleteReservation system of India should also reserve some seats for economically poor, Irrespective of their caste.
ReplyDeleteYes, ideally speaking, reservation should be given based on the economic status rather than on the caste basis. But this is not feasible with the kind of politics prevalent in India. As mentioned earlier, the discrimination regarding higher education and government jobs is known to everyone. Just imagine... you and your friends have the same economic status (you might be even lower)and are trying to get into a good college to pursue higher education. Assume your friends belong to reservation category and you don't.Now comes the funny part... your friends just need some 65 to 80 percent marks where as you need to get over 90 percent to get into that college. The same applies to government jobs too.How do you explain this?
ReplyDeleteyes, it can be a case, but it will not be the case every time, the condition in which different castes has been living are different. So the underprivileged must be given at least some facility, Its easy for some candidates to get those 90 % than to get those 60% without the support and guidance of their family. Most of the student belong to illiterate families so to bring out the Lincons of India we must have reservation quota for underprivileged.
ReplyDelete''Bring out the Lincolns of India'' I think has become cliched. In this process you can't really push the other Lincolns aside. As you said, even if this happens in some cases, what about the victims? Do you think they deserve it?
ReplyDeleteNobody is a victim here, just have a heart to do some philanthropic activity, give others a chance, they are not asking for a communist rule. Its purely democratic demand.
ReplyDeleteCome on friend, how could you say that no one is victim!! But you brought another point out. Democracy is a system where everyone has equal rights and is treated equally. Do you think it is happening here? Moreover, philanthropy doesn't tell one to victimise someone in order to help someone. Didn't you ever come across a student who's been victimised due to this unjust way of looking at the things. May be philanthropy means only to raise the living standard of the reservation group. One more point..''How could you give someone a chance when YOU don't have it?''
